A man from New Mexico was one of thousands of people who took action after the death of his neighbor, who left them without a home.
“I just saw it as being the right thing to do,” said the man, who did not want to be identified.
“It was so senseless, it was such a sad thing to see it happen.”
The man, whose name is not being released, told ABC News that the two neighbors had been fighting and had a dispute over property.
The man told ABC affiliate KOB that he found a pile of trash near his house on Saturday, and as he approached it, he saw what he thought were a couple of cats.
When he came to, the man said he saw three dogs sitting on the ground with their mouths wide open, a sign they were suffering.
The dogs had all been dumped, the homeowner said, and he was surprised to find a pile.
“The cats were laying on the floor,” he said.
“They were covered in vomit, they were covered with urine, they had their fur hanging off of them.”
After finding the animals, the woman took them to a veterinary clinic, where she said they were euthanizing them.
The couple’s neighbor is charged with felony animal cruelty and is being held on $10,000 bail.
The woman said she called the police when she heard the dogs barking.
“She said, ‘You need to call 911, we need to get the dogs out of here,'” she told KOB.
“And then we found them, laying on a table.”
She said the dog had been “devastated” by the loss of the animals.
“He was so devastated, he just couldn’t handle it,” she said.
She said she was shocked to find the animals had been dumped in a trash pile.
She and her husband decided to take action.
“We were so upset, we were just so upset,” she told ABC news.
“But I said, you know, I’m going to put it down.
You know, it’s not my fault.
I’m not the one that has to pay the bills.”
The couple said they also decided to start a Facebook page for the animals and donate $1,000 to help them care for them.
“As a community, we have to put an end to it,” the woman said.
The incident was captured on video by a neighbor, whose wife was inside the house at the time.
“You know, we heard a bunch of shots and a couple other noises, but nothing was done,” the neighbor told KBOI.
“So I went inside and saw a pile with two dogs on the couch, laying there with their eyes wide open.”
She called 911, and the man was eventually arrested.
He is charged as an accessory to animal cruelty.
“There’s a lot of people that live in the neighborhood, who are just really devastated,” the man told KCOI.
Police said the couple is currently facing misdemeanor charges.
