New York City is a popular tourist destination for Americans who travel in the Northeast and Midwest, and insurers offer affordable, comprehensive coverage.
But the region’s cheap car insurance prices have been a source of frustration for many customers, particularly in the area of the Bronx, where residents are accustomed to having more expensive car insurance.
New York insurance companies have also taken a harder line on drivers in the Bronx and other poor neighborhoods.
New Yorkers are required to have coverage in some areas of the city, but that’s not always the case, and the average rate for insurance in the city is more than three times that of the region, according to data compiled by insurance analytics firm IMS.
And many insurers have been reluctant to cover the Bronx because of a lack of demand in the boroughs surrounding it.
The Bronx has been a popular destination for many Americans who visit New York, but there’s no reliable data on what car insurance rates are for the area.
The cheapest rates were recorded by a company called Blue Shield of New York-Presbyterian-St. Luke’s, which provides policies to New York residents and their families.
Blue Shield rates ranged from about $2,200 for a 2017 Ford Escape and Ford F-150 pickup truck to about $4,800 for a 2018 BMW X5 and an Audi A4 sedan.
Blue Cross Blue Shield, the third-largest insurance company in the country, said it did not have data on average rates for car insurance in New York.
In the Bronx where the average insurance rate is nearly five times higher, Blue Shield says that’s about the same as for the city as a whole.
However, it said that it has seen a rise in the number of people applying for insurance from the Bronx since 2017, and it’s considering expanding coverage.
BlueShield spokeswoman Michelle A. Tannenbaum said that its goal is to be the best option for residents and families in the region.
“If people feel like they need to seek out a better rate or coverage, we’re going to be there to help them,” she said.
The Bronx is one of the poorest areas in the United States, with about 20% of residents living below the poverty level.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the area’s median household income was $38,945 in 2017, making it the third poorest county in the nation behind Baltimore and Detroit.
A 2017 report by the Urban Institute found that people living in the neighborhoods of the area are also more likely to have low levels of education, are more likely than their neighbors to have a disability and have less access to health care.
But despite that, the Bronx is home to a number of companies that offer affordable insurance plans to residents.
For example, in addition to Blue Shield and the Bronx’s other insurers, a company that sells coverage to the city’s poor is also in business in the neighborhood.
Insurance companies are facing pressure to make a dent in the New York region’s car insurance market.
“If you don’t see an increase in demand in New Yorkers, that could be a concern for them,” said John D’Ambrosio, an insurance analyst for research firm Avalere.
In 2018, the Federal Trade Commission launched a study looking at how the Affordable Care Act affected insurance rates.
In that report, the FTC said the law “made insurance more affordable for people with pre-existing conditions and helped people with high medical expenses avoid deductibles and other costs.”
However, the study also noted that there were significant variations in the prices of auto insurance policies in the states where people were purchasing insurance in 2018.
For instance, California had the lowest rates, followed by Texas and New York state.
